Project Description:The restoration of the Southern Theatre is a revitalization of a Victorian Age marvel. The acoustical essence of the building is an attribute of the confined space, vaulted arches and state of the art mechanical designs. Cleveland Construction, Inc. (CCI) dealt with the theatre’s unusually small quarters by implementing specialized construction practices, scheduling and extensive communication sessions. In addition to meeting a tight construction schedule (substantial completion within a year), there were no OSHA lost days. Striving for “Historic and Construction Merit,” CCI completed a complete restoration of the 102-year-old theatre that is not only awesome, but adds to the meaning of why the Southern Theatre was restored.
Cleveland Construction, Inc. was the General Contractor on this project and self performed 45% of the work. The project was divided into two separate operations. The first was the construction of a new mechanical addition that houses the elaborate heating and cooling system, and revised power supply for the building and the new fire protection systems. The second was the renovation of the existing theatre. Both new and rehabilitation activities were completed simultaneously. A new balcony level sixty feet above the first floor elevation was constructed while major restoration work continued below.
